She is the seventh Caroline Jones Women in Media Young Journalist’s Award winner, and to celebrate the opening of applications for the 2024 award, ABC Alice Springs news reporter Charmayne Allison takes us through her experience of applying for, and winning this special prize.
How did you hear about the Caroline Jones Award?
I've heard the award being praised within journalism circles throughout the years. Most recently, I heard about it through my incredible ABC colleagues Eliza Goetze and Samantha Jonscher, who were both crowned past Caroline Jones award winners. They encouraged me to enter.
I am a huge admirer of the award and how it celebrates the fearless journalism of young women across rural and regional Australia. I knew the award would offer powerful opportunities for professional growth and help connect me with some of Australia's top female journalists.
How did you decide which stories to use?
I chose to submit stories that demonstrated my passion for uncovering the hidden crises in my community of Alice Springs. Too often, the mainstream media focuses on crime and violence in the region, without examining the complex issues beneath. I've worked to change this through my reporting.
The entry process was very straightforward. I submitted a portfolio of work, a brief CV and a 500-word statement outlining the impact of my reporting and my approach to journalism.
How did you rate your chances at winning?
I was cautiously hopeful, but knew I would be up against some incredible female reporters from across rural and regional Australia.
What do you know about previous winners?
I am a massive fan of the past winners. I've long admired the integrity, tenacity and sensitivity of their reporting. Each of the previous winners has continued to have a huge impact in the media space, providing huge inspiration to myself and others.
What do you know about Caroline Jones?
Caroline Jones was a groundbreaking journalist who made enormous strides for women in media - especially television. She was the first female reporter for This Day Tonight, a Four Corners reporter for almost a decade and the founding presenter of Australian Story, spearheading the show for 20 years. She's paved the way for future generations of women in media - including me.
What was your reaction when you won?
I was absolutely blown away! I couldn't believe it. It meant so much to be counted among such an incredible group of past winners.
The prize was incredible. I won a $3000 personal learning fund and a trip to Canberra for five nights, where I spent time in a variety of Canberra and Press Gallery newsrooms, attended a National Press Club lunch and asked the first question, and received mentorship from members of the Women in Media Canberra committee.
It honestly has been one of my greatest career highlights. I got to learn from the best in the business; received mentoring from incredible women and created vital new contacts. I was also completely spoiled with beautiful accommodation and an intimate dinner with some of Canberra's top female journalists.
What were the high points and low points?
One high point was spending time with The Guardian, SMH and ABC reporters in the press gallery. Another huge high point was asking the first question at the National Press Club address with Indigenous rights activist June Oscar. Honestly, there are too many high points to name. And the only low point was when the week came to an end.
How has it changed you as a journalist and as a person?
This experience has boosted my passion and drive as a journalist. It has increased my confidence and helped me build powerful connections with some of the country's best reporters. Finally, it has equipped me with new skills and knowledge I will carry for the rest of my career.
I know this experience will be a turning point in my career. I am so grateful for this award, and I know it will impact me for years to come.
Would you recommend it to other potential applicants?
One hundred per cent! If you are a young female reporter in regional or rural Australia, don't hesitate to apply.
